Unleashing the Power of Shockwave Therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis Relief

Tyler Hamel DC, FPSC,(C) • January 9, 2024

It is 2024 and in this cold Houston weather, I bet more and more people are feeling those arthritis pains.  There are many patients in the Kingwood area who come in and tell me, "Dr. Hamel I went to the orthopedic doctor and he/she said that I had arthritis, early stage arthritis, severe arthritis or osteoarthritis in my knee.

We now providing our patients a potential breakthrough in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee – shockwave therapy. As someone dedicated to promoting health and  well-being, I thought you might find this information  valuable for your personal knowledge. Some of you have already tried our shockwave therapy for knee pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain and other extremity pain and have seen amazing results.

Afterall Osteoarthritis currently affects over 375 million  people in the US. We could see 50 patients a day with  osteoarthritis and it would hardly make a dent in that population, this is a severe condition and getting worse as time goes on.

Osteoarthritis is a prevalent and debilitating condition, affecting hundreds of thousands of  people Texas. It commonly targets weight-bearing joints like the knee, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Traditional treatments often involve pain management, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgical interventions. However, a growing body of research suggests that shockwave therapy may offer a promising alternative or complementary approach. FYI we have knee  patients who are bone and bone doing shockwave therapy who want to put off knee replacement surgery...and it is working!

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), utilizes acoustic waves to stimulate healing processes within the body. Here are some key benefits associated with shockwave therapy for osteoarthritis of the knee:

Pain Management/Reduction: Shockwave therapy has shown promising results in reducing pain associated with osteoarthritis. The acoustic waves stimulate the release of substances that modulate pain perception, providing relief to patients.

Improved Functionality: Studies indicate that shockwave therapy can improve knee function by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation. This can enhance the overall quality of life for individuals struggling with osteoarthritis.

Non-Invasive and Low-Risk: Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure, eliminating the need for surgical interventions. It is generally considered safe, with minimal side effects reported, making it an attractive option for those seeking alternatives to more invasive treatments.

Fast Recovery: Patients undergoing shockwave therapy typically experience minimal downtime. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and individuals can resume their daily activities shortly after the session.

Something worth noting, almost all of the knee pain patients coming into our office, (meniscus tear, ligament tears, bone on bone, patellar tendinitis, jumpers knee, or tracking problems), usually have an arthritis component to them.

I believe that staying informed about emerging therapies is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide the best care for their patients. If you find this information intriguing, I would be happy to share more detailed studies and research articles on the subject.

**Keep in mind, we are the ONLY chiropractic office, in fact the ONLY office in the North Houston and Huffman area that has invested in shockwave therapy. We just were not happy, (and nethier our patients), in how long it was taking to get knee pain, frozen shoulder carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and plantar fasciitis to get better. Before shockwave therapy we could only use manual therapies which just seemed to take forever.
